The plant, based near Liverpool, produces machinery for the pharmaceutical industry. According to the Liverpool Echo, Bosch has announced proposals to cease the production of tablet presses and coaters at Knowsley Business Park, which it blamed on competition in the market.

Bosch said it has entered into a period of consultation with affected staff and Unite the Union. The company said it could not give an indication yet of the level of job losses, adding that it would try and keep them to an “absolute minimum”.

A company statement said: “Competition has increased and it has become difficult for the Knowsley location to compete on a global scale.

“Furthermore, new technology demands for solid dose manufacturing were introduced to the market and because of the increased demand for line solutions, Bosch Packaging Technology sees the need to adapt its business model to these changed market conditions.”

Tablet presses and coaters will be produced at two specialist pharmaceutical sites in Germany. Bosch said the Knowsley factory will continue to supply a full schedule of services for all its machines.

Packaging News has been in contact with Bosch and Unite but neither were available for further comment.
